Time Magazine sees the world in black and white

Time Magazine has quite the habit of relying on black and white covers.

In fact, 247 covers over the past decade were one of the two colors. That’s about sixty percent of all the editions.

Blue was another popular background, followed closely by gray (or silver).

The least popular Time cover colors?

Pink and purple. Both pastel colors were featured on only two covers each from 2000 – 2010.

Christmas reveals nation’s most religious daily newspapers

Though religious expression may remain undercover for the majority of the year, nothing brings faith to the front pages of the nation’s newspapers like Christmas Day.

While most editors, publishers and designers tend to keep their respective daily newspapers politically correct for the holiday, some use the season as a reason to celebrate and proclaim the history of the holiday, the birth of Jesus Christ.

The gallery of Christmas Day front pages at Newseum.org provided just such a glimpse on the morning of December 25th, showing off a stark contrast between Claus and Christ.

The majority of Christmas issues promote local good deeds, giving, Christmas events and parties, and cute Santa appearances. Some newspapers use columnists or guest writers to tell the nativity story in their own unique way.

But the eleven papers mentioned below are the only ones that proclaimed Christ’s birth of their own accord, without help from the community. Nearly all of the papers are based in towns East of the Mississippi River.

Take a look at the nation’s most religious daily newspapers:

Obama on track to triple TIME cover record.

Whose face has appeared on more TIME magazine covers than any other?

It’s easy to guess Barack Obama, whose image has overwhelmed newsstands since the 2008 election season, but Obama only has half as many covers as the current record-holder: Richard Nixon.

Nixon has been pictured on nearly 50 TIME magazine covers, just four above the next runner-up, Ronald Reagan.

Only 18 people have appeared on ten or more TIME covers and all are politicians, though only three are not American.

Despite having been president for less than a year, TIME’s gushing love for Obama is apparent in the fact that he has already appeared on 24 covers. That’s more than half as many as Reagan appeared on after eight years in the White House. At the current rate, Obama could appear on more than 150 TIME covers by the end of an eight year presidency.

Hillary Clinton has appeared on the most TIME covers for a female and for a non-president. Al Gore appears on the most covers for a vice president never having won the presidency. And Gerald Ford has been on the highest number of covers for a non-Person of the Year.

Top 10 TIME Magazine Covers of 2009

You won’t find TIME magazine on the list of the top ten magazine covers of this year. Or last year. Or even the year before that.

It’s not a lack of gripping covers, it’s simply that the newsmagazine creates the annual list and keeps itself out of it.

Here are the top ten TIME magazine covers for 2009:

1. How Not to Lose in Afghanistan, April 29

A striking original TIME photograph by Adam Ferguson gets all the credit for mirroring public reaction to the war in the shot of a single soldier on a smoke break. The image captures the vastness of the effort while putting a face on the fight. It tells the public and the Obama administration that there’s more at stake than just a war, it’s the uncertainty of this man’s life.
